Vendor Neutral Archiving
Q: What is a Vendor Neutral Archive?
An enterprise archive acting as a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) puts an end to the traditional information lifecycle management allowing data ownership to be placed back into the hands of the organisation instead of the vendor. “Vendor Neutral” means PACS neutrality, application neutrality, storage neutrality and server neutrality, along with network friendly services.
A VNA allows a site to break the physical path to where the information actually resides and converts the path into a service request to go and find the requested information. As these service requests are centred around the VNA, and not the various PACS, this solution is able to offer a manageable and open set of APIs to any application that wants to connect now or in the future.
This is a discovery service much like Google works today. One search request (from a user or application) results in the discovery of all related information on any other system matching the search request.
Significant cost savings can be achieved for long term archiving using a VNA and purchasing aligned storage as it is required for all imaging activity, not only radiology. Separating the archive from the clinical applications reduces the risk and allows the consolidation of storage for all imaging requirements to be purchased at market prices as and when the need arises.
Data Migration
The best way to understand the condition of your data, the number of studies and the strategy on how you will resolve the issues found with your data, is to perform a Data Migration Assessment, often called a pre-migration assessment.
Many customers contract the assessment through their PACS company or with Acuo directly to perform the assessment well in advance of the planned migration. Determining an accurate number of studies is critical for determining the budget for the migration, including but not limited to; RIS support for data cleansing, legacy PACS vendor support, internal staffing needs, storage requirements on the new archiving system among others.
It also helps ensure the proper sizing for the hardware, network, and VPN is deployed for the migration.
The Data Migration Assessment provides detailed Patient meta-data files allowing the customer to identify problematic data sets. These problems can be corrected manually and/or automatically during the migration using Acuo's data cleansing tools. Custom reports can also be run; for example, a report showing the number of studies with no accession number, missing MRN's or other issues. This service can be provided remotely and in a few days with the right IT support.
