New high-performance and low-voltage blades
IBM has announced five new HS22 and HS22V blade servers, which utilise the new range of Intel Xeon 5600 Series processors to deliver even better levels of efficiency.

For clients who need the best possible performance in their BladeCenter environment, there are two great options. For raw power, the quad-core Intel Xeon X5677 processor offers a clock speed of 3.46GHz and 12MB Intel Smart Cache. For more highly parallelized workloads, the six-core X5680 processor is ideal, capable of running 12 threads at 3.33GHz with 12MB cache Intel Smart Cache.

IBM will also be providing three new options for clients who are concerned about energy consumption and all-round price performance. Blades based on the Intel Xeon L5638, L5645, and L5618 processors can run at lower voltages than the standard offering, and are designed to offer increased performance per Watt. This makes them the perfect choice for businesses that want to reduce their carbon footprint and reduce data centre energy costs.

eX5 continues to lead the way
IBM continues to extend its lead in the Intel 7500 series space as other vendors struggle to even announce a product, or bring compromised offerings to the market.

A quick review of the Dell M910 shows that it lacks the memory capacity of the IBM BladeCenter HX5 with MAX5. Closer examination reveals that it only has half as many memory controllers as HX5, which is likely to have a negative impact on its comparative memory performance. With lower performance and smaller capacity, a server’s ability to support numerous virtual machines is reduced, which can result in higher overall costs.


Intelligent power and cooling
For several years, the BladeCenter H chassis has been the workhorse of IBM’s BladeCenter range, and its well-publicised advantages over HP BladeSystem have made it a compelling proposition for clients. The current model is a particular favourite with energy-conscious businesses, as research by the Edison Group has shown that it consumes nearly 10 percent less power than an HP BladeSystem c7000.

So what’s new? Well, the good news is that IBM is making the BladeCenter H even better. From November onwards, the H chassis will ship with new 2980W power supplies, which deliver up to 95 percent energy efficiency under load. This is a five percentage-point improvement on the existing model – and will help to stretch IBM’s lead over HP even further.

Other features include a more powerful – and more intelligent – cooling system, capable of supporting the new generation of high-performance 130W processors. The fans will adapt automatically to altitude and atmospheric pressure, maximising efficiency wherever the data centre is located. Finally, a new energy monitoring tool within the BladeCenter Advanced Management Module will help administrators keep tabs on the chassis’ power consumption.
