Celerity were delighted to sponsor and present at the latest Newcastle Tech UG event on Thursday 10th May. We sent out James Grant and Paul Bailey from sales along with our Principal Consultant, Darren Sanders, to talk about data storage and protection.

The event attracted over 30 attendees with the faithful making it all the way to the networking beers session in the bar at the end of the day. Troopers! Tech UG is a special series of events where the commercial presence is limited to a few handpicked vendors and the focus is on “real world” issues and solutions, presented and discussed by “techies”, so no sales talk here. However, James and Paul managed to stay under the radar and ask the important questions when networking. Some of the highlights were a couple of walk-throughs on delivering projects, one being a total overhaul for the infrastructure at Leeds based Wrigleys Solicitors and the other being the Confused.com transition from on-premise infrastructure to a totally cloud based solution from Azure.

A dev ops panel was the final section of the day and the questions varied from basic, student level queries, through to sophisticated complex scenarios posted by experienced upper IT management. The fish and chips lunch did the Geordie Jury’s Inn proud, with a humous option for the veggies. The only criticism of the Newcastle event was the lack of female attendees, unlike Leeds and Manchester. Which have started to see a move toward gender equality, collectively from the attendees, group members and exhibitors. A trend we hope continues in the world of IT.

If you like to be in the know about the latest technology, covering infrastructure, dev ops, security and so on then these are the events for you. The organisers are open to suggestions and requests from members, and will arrange for the relevant presenters to attend at later events. They even allow the tech audience to bring their projects and homework to the forum, which gives insight into what’s going on in the land of IT. The events are sponsored by IT partners so the attendance is free, and so is membership of the user group in your local area.
